READING CLUB SUPERSTARS

FADE IN:

INT. BATHROOM
STEVEN, 12, skinny and Korean American, sits on a toilet and reads.

INT. OUTSIDE BATHROOM DOOR
Sound of toilet flushing behind door. Door opens. STEVEN comes out, book covering face as he reads.

INT. LIVING ROOM
STEVEN sits on sofa couch and reads. He fans himself with his hands and moves around, trying to find a comfortable position.

STEVEN
Mom! It's too hot in here!

MOM
(O.S.)
Then get out! Go to library!

STEVEN sighs. He reads a bit longer. Still uncomfortable and hot. He gets up and leaves.

INT. PUBLIC LIBRARY
Small, cozy and well-lit.

STEVEN walks in with three books in hand and a notebook. He drops two of the books into the RETURN BIN.

He sits down at a table and begins to read. He finishes the last few pages of the book and writes in his notebook, which reads JULY on top of the page. He walks over the to RETURN BIN and drops the book off.

INT. PUBLIC LIBRARY YOUTH AREA
STEVEN walks to the BULLETIN BOARD and looks under the READING CLUB SUPERSTARS banner. A paper, stapled to the board, lists fifteen "members."

ON SCREEN:
Rankings for JUNE
1. LISA PARK, age 12 - 875 pages
2. STEVEN KIM, age 12 - 769 pages
3. GREG RUBIN, age 13 - 632 pages

Next to the list, there is a RECOMMENDED SUMMER BOOKS list. STEVEN runs his finger over Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe.

He spots a GIRL, pretty and Asian, browsing for a book in the D section. He walks to the D section and starts to look for the book.

STEVEN and GIRL are side-by-side. He gives her a glance. She doesn't even notice him.

They both reach at the same time for Robinsin Crusoe, yellow book binding. Their hands bump into each other. They turn their heads and look at each other, smiling and embarrassed.

GIRL
Did you want that, too?

STEVEN
Yeah.

GIRL
Oh.

Awkward silence.

STEVEN
Um. Rocks-paper-scissor for it?

GIRL
(a bit surprised)
O-kay.

They play once. STEVEN throws paper. GIRL throws rock.

GIRL (CONT'D)
Best out of three.

STEVEN
Okay.

STEVEN throws scissor. GIRL throws rock.

One more time. STEVEN throws paper. GIRL throws rock.

STEVEN (CONT'D)
Sorry. I win.

GIRL
I was here first. It should be mine.

STEVEN
I won fair and square.

GIRL storms off. STEVEN shrugs. He walks back to the table and begins reading.

A LIBRARIAN, elderly with white hair and glasses, walks over to STEVEN, accompanied by the GIRL.

LIBRARIAN
Excuse me. Did you take that book from this lady?

STEVEN
No.

GIRL
Yes you did. I had it first.

LIBRARIAN
Please give her the book. You can't just take books from other people.

STEVEN
But...

The LIBRARIAN takes the book away. She gives it to the GIRL.

LIBRARIAN
Here you go, Lisa. And you, young man, if this
happens again, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.

The LIBRARIAN walks away. LISA flashes an evil smirk at STEVEN and walks away.

STEVEN walks back to the BULLETIN BOARD and looks at the READING CLUB SUPERSTARS list once again.

ON SCREEN:
1. LISA PARK, age 12 - 875 pages
2. STEVEN KIM, age 12 - 769 pages

STEVE turns around and sees LISA reading at another table.

He looks around and tries to find another book.

He looks up in LISA's direction again. He sees her put the book down, get up, and walk to the bathroom.

The book lies on the table unattended.

STEVEN quickly walks to her table. He nonchalantly grabs the book. He goes up to the front desk where he hands his library card and book to the LIBRARIAN.

LIBRARIAN (CONT'D)
Wasn't this the book you took from Lisa before?

STEVEN
She said I could have it.

LIBRARIAN
Oh. How nice of her.

The LIBRARIAN scans the book. STEVEN takes it and goes back to grab his notebook from the table. LISA walks out of the bathroom. STEVEN conceals the book behind the notebook.

STEVEN
Hey, finish the book fast so I can read it soon. I'm going home. Bye.

LISA
(looking surprised)
Okay. Bye.

STEVEN hurries out of the LIBRARY before LISA returns to her table.

EXT. OUTSIDE LIBRARY
STEVEN smirks. He thumbs the book. There is a personalized BOOKMARK that reads: LISA PARK, JUNE SUPERSTAR READER OF THE MONTH. STEVEN throws it onto the sidewalk.

FADE OUT.
